This is the first Minneapolis performance for The Saint Paul City Ballet Company, and features the emerging talent of its dancers as choreographers. The program consists of four pieces that fuse classical ballet vocabulary with contemporary dance and dramatic virtuosic excerpts from Raymonda.

The artists of SPCB are versatile dancers who are both graceful and athletic. These young talents infuse the music with passion to create intimate classicism and breathless innovation that will inspire and delight.

The dancers in Air and Simple Gifts represent musical instruments from the score. Choreographer Jennifer Rockwell says of the work, “The piece is a reflection on a long journey out of darkness toward hope and renewal.”

MD2 is a bright and witty piece danced to the music of jazz legend Miles Davis. Taking a cue from Davis’s innovative arrangements, Ross Edward’s and Andrew Lester’s choreography has a bounding, improvised feel.

Baroque composer Tomaso Albinoni’s sonata sets the tone for Gentle Breath, Suspended, a neoclassical work for four dancers. The core of the piece, a tender pas de deux featuring Andrew Lester and Jennifer Rockwell expresses themes of longing and compassion.

Danse Macabre is a modern interpretation of a medieval allegory set to music by Camille Saint-Saens. Choreographer Ross Edwards explains, “The ballet illustrates the power of love over death.”

The evening will close with the company performing a series of virtuosic excerpts from the classic Russian ballet Raymonda.  This ballet, originally choreographed by Marius Petipa, combines precise classical technique with the rich personality of Hungarian character dance to offer the audience a powerful and dramatic end to the evening.
