Anna-Marie Holmes is recognized internationally as the leading authority on 19th century classical ballet. Her interpretations of the great Russian ballet classics have been produced and set around the world including Florence, Lisbon, Tokyo, Oslo, Naples, and New York. She staged Le Corsaire to extraordinary critical acclaim for the American Ballet Theater in 1998.
Ms. Holmes appeared as a ballerina and teacher in more than 30 countries on five continents. She was trained and coached in Russia in the great ballet classics by Natalia Dudinskaya and Alexander Pushkin of the legendary St. Petersburg’s Kirov Ballet. She was the first North American invited to perform with the Kirov.
Ms. Holmes joined Boston Ballet in 1985 and became the leading artistic visionary at the company. Appointed Artistic Director in 1997 she built Boston Ballet from a small regional company to one of prominence in the United States throughout her tenure. In addition to her role as Artistic Director of Boston Ballet, Ms. Holmes served as Dean of Faculty for Boston Ballet Center for Dance Education. She formulated a unique system of training for the school based on the Vaganova System, and assisted in student evaluations and teacher training.
